Neurotology and Skull Base Surgery<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Douglas\nBackous is a board-certified Neurologist specializing in treating conditions of\nthe ear and skull base. He attended Seattle Pacific University before\ngraduating from the University of Washington School of Medicine in 1989. He\ncompleted his internship and residency in Otolaryngology -Head and Neck Surgery\nat Baylor College of Medicine (Houston, Texas) in 1995.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He went on\nto complete research followed by a clinical fellowship in Neurotology at John\nHopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland in 1997. He and his family move back\nto Seattle to pursue his career, to give back to the community that helped him\ngrow up and be closer to family.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

For more\nthan 22 years, Dr. Backous has provided leading edge treatments for patients\nwith hearing loss, deafness, chronic ear infection, cholesteatoma acoustic\nneuromas and facial nerve disorders. His professional passion is ensuring\naccess to care for patients who choose to hear with cochlear implants,\nbrainstem implants, BAHA \u2122 and other hearing devices. He treats adults and\nchildren.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Backous\nis currently the Board Chair at Seattle Pacific University in Seattle,\nWashington. He has served on the SPU board since 2011. Both Doug (\u201984) and his\nwife, Julie (\u201986), are alumni of SPU. They have 3 adult children.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His medical\nresearch interests focus on implantable hearing device program efficiency for\nimproved patient access and program viability. His interests in working with\nhigher education is to improve the value and quality of education offered to\nstudents coming from diverse backgrounds. He is also the program director for\nthe Seattle Advanced Otology Fellowship at Puget Sound ENT.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Dr. Backous\njoined Puget Sound ENT in Edmonds, Washington in 2017. He performs surgery at\nthe Edmonds Center for Outpatient Surgery, Swedish Cherry Hill and First Hill\nand at Swedish Edmonds. He also sees patients in clinic and performs outpatient\nsurgery at the Hillside Surgery Center in Puyallup, Washington to provide local\naccess to high level surgical and specialty care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
