An otolaryngologist is a physician trained in the medical\nand surgical management of ear, nose and throat diseases and disorders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Commonly referred to as ENTs, they identify and treat\ndiseases of the ears, nose, sinuses, larynx, mouth, throat and structures of\nthe face and neck. Otolaryngologists complete up to 15 years of college and\npost-graduate training, including medical school. Many also complete a one- or\ntwo-year fellowship to gain more extensive training.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All otolaryngologist must be certified by the American Board\nof Otolaryngology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There are seven areas of expertise in the field of\notolaryngology: <\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Allergy.<\/strong> This\nincludes treatment for hay fever, seasonal rhinitis and chronic sinus\ninfections.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Facial Plastic and\nReconstructive Surgery.<\/strong> This includes treatment for deviated septums, face\nlifts and rhinoplasty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Head and Neck.<\/strong>\nThis includes treatment for thyroid disorders, lumps in the neck and cancer of\nthe voice box. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Laryngology\n(throat).<\/strong> This includes treatment for sore throats, swallowing disorders\nand GERD.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

5.\nOtology\/Neurotology (ears).<\/strong> This includes treatment for ear infections,\nhearing loss and tinnitus. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

6. Pediatric\nOtolaryngology.<\/strong> This includes treatment for tonsil and adenoid infections,\nasthma and sinus disease. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

7. Rhinology (nose).<\/strong>\nThis includes treatment for stuffy noses, loss of smell and nasal polyps. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
